The Reserve is a beautiful, iconic, and historically significant property located in Downtown Sarasota at the intersection of 14th Street and U.S. 41, across from Whitaker Gateway Bayfront Park.

When guests visit The Reserve, they get an opportunity to stop, slow down, and immerse themselves in a bygone area, enjoying great casual fare and drinks while also being able to browse contemporary and classic books across many different genres.

Imagine if the walls of the Reserve could talk…

These three beautiful, iconic buildings are 100 years old and were originally owned by Charles Ringling and his wife, Edith.

“Mr. Charlie,” brother of John Ringling, was instrumental not only in the Ringling Brothers Circus, but was responsible for building and developing much of Sarasota, for which he receives little credit.

The original land plat, instead of N. Tamiami Trail, was located on “Banana Avenue.” Sometime in the 1920s, the street was upgraded to the more upscale sounding “Broadway Avenue.”

Two of the Reserve homes were also used as a temporary home to John Ringling when they were building his estate, the Ca’D’Zan. When they were finished building the Ca’D’Zan (House of John), they moved the buildings down U.S. 41, then a dirt road, by mules.

The third building was built at a later date and used by the circus performers as a practice and performance venue.

In the 1940s, the three buildings and the land they are situated on was known as Parker's Court Camp (a boarding house and inn), operated by Beulah Parker, widow of James Parker. The homes served as her primary residence.

Much later, sometime in the early 1990s, these homes belonged to James and Darcy Van Lienden and their children. They operated a photo studio and a frame shop out of this location for many years. (They have shared many historic photos of the building with us and for that, we are grateful!)

We have returned these Ringling family homes to their former glory and opened them so that they can be shared with all of Sarasota. And today, The Reserve is a unique gathering place and casual eatery that also includes a wine bar; retail wine shop; craft beer bar; cafe with coffees, teas, and kombuchas; independent bookstore; live music venue, and venue space in Downtown Sarasota. Each building also includes guest accommodations, and we have a great selection of curated books. The Reserve is a special place and you never know who you might meet here: artists; Broadway performers; elected officials; musicians spanning Motown to jazz to world music; authors (local, national, and international); minor and major celebrities (including reality show actors); national news networks; hurricane chasers; scientists; mystics; poets; priests, and more!
